How do I change the statement descriptor for my organization?

Your statement descriptor is the business name that appears on your customer’s credit card statements.

What is a statement descriptor?

Your statement descriptor is the business name that appears on your customer’s credit card statements. Use a recognizable name to reduce disputes and chargebacks.

Banks and card networks require the inclusion of certain types of information that help customers understand their statements, and statement descriptors provide this information. All accounts must set a valid statement descriptor to process card payments.

Stripe creates a default statement descriptor based on your organization's legal business name, but you can update it to reflect the name of your organization better.

Changing the state descriptor

  1. Log in to your Stripe account by going to Financial Management and clicking on Stripe Settings. Click the three dots and select View Express Dashboard.

  2. Follow the prompts to log into the account.

  3. Click the Profile icon on the Stripe dashboard.

  4. Scroll to the Public Details section and click Edit next to Public descriptor.

  5. Edit the Statement descriptor.

Note: A valid statement descriptor (or shortened descriptor) must meet the following requirements:

    • Contains only Latin characters

    • Contains between 5 and 22 characters, inclusive (shortened descriptors are limited to 10 characters)

    • Doesn’t contain any of the following special characters: <, >, \, ' " *

    • Reflects your Doing Business As Name (DBA), URL, or Legal Entity Name

Stripe employs a matching algorithm to determine if the statement descriptor reflects your DBA, URL, or Legal Entity Name. The algorithm will accept exact matches, most acronyms, most matching words, and most substrings.

If you are having a hard time matching the name, try values closer to an exact match with the DBA, URL, or Legal Entity Name associated with your account.
