How do I create product modifiers?

Product modifiers let you offer optional add-ons that change a product’s total price without creating separate product variants. They’re a good fit when the base product stays the same, but supporters can choose extras like toppings, rush fees, lunch add-ons, or personalization.

Use modifiers when you want a simple product setup, dynamic add-on pricing, and consolidated reporting in a single product. If the selection creates a physically different item or needs separate inventory tracking, use variants instead.

Before you start

Note: Product modifiers are best for optional add-ons that affect price but do not create a new product combination.

  • Use modifiers for things like toppings, special handling, optional lunch, or custom add-ons.

  • Use variants for things like shirt size, color, or other combinations that need separate inventory tracking.

  • Use additional fields when you only need to collect information and there is no price change.

  • For the best experience, use no more than 5 modifiers per product.

Create the product

  1. Go to Store, then select Products.

  2. Click New Store Product to start a new product.

  3. Enter the product’s basic details.

    • Add the Product Name.

    • Select the correct Category.

    • Set the base price for the product.

    • Add a description and any other standard product details you want supporters to see.

  2. In the saved modifiers window, select from the pre-existing modifiers or click Add New Modifier if you need to create a new modifier set.

Note: Modifiers are shared across all products. Once created, they are available site-wide. Saved modifiers can be viewed and created under Store > Settings > Saved Product Modifiers.

  3. Add your modifier details.

    • Enter a Modifier Name, such as Hamburger toppings.

    • Choose the Modifier Type - Single Select or Multi Select.

    • Add each Modifier Choice and assign its price adjustment.

    • Price adjustments can add to the product total or can be listed at no extra cost. For example, lettuce for $0.00, tomato for $0.50, or cheese for $1.00.

What supporters see when buying

  1. When supporters open the product page, they’ll see the modifier choices listed with their individual prices. As they select add-ons, the total price updates.

  2. After the item is added to the cart, the cart shows the selected modifiers and the updated item price so supporters can confirm exactly what they chose.

  3. Supporters can then continue to checkout to complete the purchase.

View modifier details in reporting

  1. After orders are placed, go to Ordered Items to review how modifier pricing affected each order. The Modifier Price column shows the total add-on amount for the line item.

  2. In the same report, the Modifiers column shows which selections were chosen for each purchase. This gives admins a clear breakdown while keeping all sales grouped under the same product.

Best practices

  1. Keep modifier groups simple.

    • Use clear names that supporters will understand right away.

    • Avoid adding too many choices unless they are truly needed.

  2. Use modifiers only when the base product stays the same.

    • A coffee with cream and sugar is still coffee.

    • A field trip with optional lunch is still the same field trip product.

  3. Use variants when inventory matters.

    • If each combination needs its own stock count, variants are the better choice.

  4. Use additional fields when no price change is needed.

    • For example, use an informational field for a custom note or student name when it does not affect cost.
